The Royal Abbey of Chaalis actually includes ruins, a museum and gardens. During the High Middle Ages and the Renaissance, a rich intellectual activity developed here. Despite the state of ruins, there is a chapel with very well preserved frescoes by Francesco Primaticcio.

The monastery, with its late 18th century castle, is located 4 km south of Fontaine-Chaalis, in the department of Oise, about 40 km north-west of Paris. The complex is located in a former marsh on the brook Aunette, on the northeast edge of the forest of Ermenonville. Directly opposite the entrance of the former monastery is the amusement park La Mer de Sable. The forest of Ermenonville is famous for the castle of Ermenonville, where Jean-Jacques Rousseau died in 1778.

The chateau houses a modest museum, partly dedicated to its last private owner, Nélie Jacquemart, who was also an accomplished painter. It is operated by the Institut de France. There are also educational activities and guided tours, courses and events. Hiking trails have been plotted in the area.
