The Samaria Gorge is one of the highlights on the island, especially for hikers, active vacationers and everyone who doesn't just want to spend their holidays in hotels and on the beach. The gorge is around 13 km long from the entrance to the exit house - incidentally one of the longest in Europe - and with an altitude difference of 1,200 meters, it is also a superlative in this respect. The gorge is lined by up to 600 m high vertical rock walls, which allow a passage of only three to four meters at the so-called "iron gate".

The gorge is beautiful, but since it is one of the tourist highlights of Crete, up to 4000 people hike through it in the summer high season and it is often quite crowded.
