    Landmark Roman Villa

Artist Hans Lemmen was commissioned by the province of Limburg to design a work of art that explains the archaeological value of the Roman cobblestone and its surroundings. He does this by making the Roman past in Grootloon 'visible' to the general public in a very special and artistic way.

The benches, which consist of different seating elements, have the shape of a Roman villa with its gently sloping roofs and inward-facing gallery at the front. Just like the villas at the time, the benches are scattered over the landscape. With the front facing south. The warm terracotta color refers to the color of the Roman roof tiles and bricks. The benches on the sloping roof side bear a three-dimensional indication of a different villa from the area. The imprint shows the plan of a villa, the name of the place and the distance in kilometers en passus to the bank.

Here you will find information boards about the history of the Roman presence in these regions and some achievements of the Romans in general. Various stone constructions simultaneously function as benches and sources of information. One has various information boards, the others have plans of Roman villas that have been found in Haspengouw. The most photographed is undoubtedly the one where a stone statue of a Roman man overlooks the beautiful valley. You can of course do that yourself here. And if you don't like the stone seats, there are also other (picnic) benches. In short: a place where views, education and tranquility (can) meet. By the way, you are here on the Roman highway and a few minutes' walk from a wooden viewing platform. Also for cyclists who can also attach their steel horse here to a bicycle parking space in wood provided for this purpose.

ACCESS: only on foot or by bike. If you are by car, park in the car park (Pb) on Sint-Truidersteenweg between Grootloonstraat and Neremstraat and continue on foot. From the parking you follow the green walking route.
