"The land of 1000 ponds". The pond landscape with a size of approx. 75 km2 lies on a plateau of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. The center of the ponds is located between the villages of Plothen, Dreba, Knau, Bucha, Volkmannsdorf and Schöndorf.The former 2,000 ponds (now around 600) were opened in the 11th / 12th. It was laid out in the 19th century by monks for the purpose of fish farming. They are connected with a partially vertical system of ditches and are not fed by spring water, but by precipitation, hence the name "sky ponds". This historically evolved pond landscape is unique at an altitude of 480 to 500 m.
