Skagen West was built in 1956 to replace the Højen lighthouse, which was in danger of collapsing into the sea. The lighthouse is cast in concrete using the slip-form method on a former German bunker. The casting took 14 days to complete, which is roughly the same time as the construction of Skagen Lighthouse. However, it should also be noted that Skagen Lighthouse has walls that are thicker than the outer diameter of Skagen West.
