The monastery estate Marienstein looks back on a long history. It was founded in the 11th century and over time it accumulated a considerable ownership of land. Until the beginning of the 16th century, the monks resisted the Reformation, when the monastery came under the influence of the Dukes of Brunswick, it finally became Lutheran.

At the end of the 16th century, more and more free workers settled around the monastery, working on the lands of the monastery. This is how the village of Marienstein came into being.

Today, the buildings and parts of the former lands are used by the University of Göttingen for research in the fields of agricultural economics and agricultural engineering.

Marienstein is a former monastery community, which was incorporated in 1928 in the spots Nörten-Hardenberg. (...) Large parts of the former monastery estate are still preserved from the beginning of the 18th century. (...) The baroque hall church, which was elevated slightly to the northeast corner of the manor, was built in 1724-33. (...) The oldest part of the church is the hall crypt in the basement, which was preserved by the predecessor building. Due to the forms of jewelry, an edification in the second half of the 12th century is assumed.
