The Sambre, itself channeled over almost its entire length with numerous locks, is connected by canals to the Oise (Sambre-Oise Canal) and to Brussels (Canal Charleroi-Brussels, which is continued north to the Scheldt). The canalisation of the Sambre, carried out between 1825 and 1839, turned the Hainaut town of Thuin into an important inland shipping center in the 19th century. A towpath runs along the winding part of the river.
