A few kilometers north of the center of Żory, in the forest, by the Gichta pond, there is a brick hoist tower operating here in the first half of the 19th century, the "Waleska" smelter. The tower, called the gichta, was used to pull the charge - i.e. bog iron ore, charcoal and fluxes - to a considerable height with a manual crane, in order to cover a nearby cylindrical blast furnace. The building was built in the 1830s on a plan similar to a square. It is 15 m high, the interior dimensions are 610 by 775 cm. The walls are almost a meter thick.
