Above the city, on a rock plateau - about 70 meters above the Elbe - is the Sonnenstein Castle with a beautiful park. The driveway is steep, but it is worth it - you will be rewarded with wonderful views of Pirna.

The fortification was created in the second half of the 10th century. In the 15th and 16th centuries a mighty fortress grew here, which at times served as the main Saxon fortress. Between 1675 and 1685 it was significantly expanded and redesigned by the baroque master builder Wolf Caspar von Klengel. Further renovations and new buildings were added between 1735 and 1737 under the architect Jean de Bodt, who had the fortress’s Elbe wing and the new barracks built. In the first half of the 18th century, the Sonnenstein also had to fulfill the task of a state prison.

In the years that followed, the building housed a sanatorium for the mentally ill, which was abused as a Nazi killing facility between 1940 and 1941. After the end of the Second World War, the sun stone was used for various purposes until the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district bought it from the Free State of Saxony at the end of 2007.

From 2008 the former Sonnenstein fortress was extensively renovated. The palace complex was reconstructed according to the monument and expanded to become the district seat of the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains region. The older part of the complex, the bastions and fortifications from the 18th century and the terrace gardens from the 19th century have been restored and have been open to the public since 2012.

Inside, too, the castle has a lot of sights to offer. In addition to a permanent historical exhibition, organized tours are also offered, during which you can learn a lot about the history and architecture of the sunstone.
