Chapel of the Visitation of Mary, Plattenbödeli since 1939
The small sanctuary is located to the left of the Brülisau-Brüeltobel-Sämtisersee mountain path not far from the Plattenbödeli inn.
The chapel consists of an open, five-sided choir room in a steep wooden construction with a central altar and retable of the Visitation of Mary. It has two kneelers inside and many benches in the fenced-in forecourt. The wooden grilles can be swung open. The altar table and the ambo (since 1999) were discovered and relocated from massive stones not far from the building site. The image of the Virgin Mary shows the Mother of God visiting her cousin Elisabeth. The liturgical equipment was donated by St. Gallen.
History
For years, local and foreign mountain enthusiasts and Mary worshipers had been planning to build a small sanctuary of the Mother of God on the Plattenbödeli. Despite the unfavorable times, the work was promoted. The construction was mainly carried out on the initiative of St. Gallen mountain enthusiasts, supported by local circles, especially Dr. Franz Peterer. On August 21, 1939, 91 people carried the wood to the chapel site. Almost all of the work was carried out as forced labor. The chapel was inaugurated on October 22, 1939 according to the plans of painter Johannes Hugentobler. The bell was donated by Catholic scouts and gymnasts from St. Gallen, inaugurated on October 20 in the gymnasium of the Catholic cantonal secondary school in St. Gallen and then carried up.
