The path from the Gafia valley to the Rätschenjoch (2,602 meters) leads along the edge of the Gafierplatten just before the pass. Two layers of rock meet there, which contrast perfectly in terms of colour: the bright, geologically younger limestone layer of the Sulzfluh nappe submerges under the geologically older layers of the so-called Silvretta crystalline on the east side. This is dark gneiss that forms the rugged Madrisa bergstock and is weathered into fine debris. A diverse flora thrives in this mineral-rich rubble.
