The city was first mentioned in the 11th century in a deed of gift to the Patriarch of Aquileia. Even then, the place was fortified, which was rebuilt and strengthened during the administration under various rulers, starting with the Counts of Gorizia, the Habsburgs, the owners of Devin, as well as the Austrian Empire.
