With the popular name The Bronze Horseman, the bronze equestrian statue of Tsar Peter the Great, erected in 1782, is named on the Senate Square in Saint Petersburg. The equestrian statue is one of the landmarks of Saint Petersburg. The figure was created by Étienne-Maurice Falconet on behalf of Catherine the Great. This can also be seen as an inscription on the very mopdern acting pedestal. I was told that Katharina as a German tried u.a. to engrave a statue dedicated to this Tsar Peter into the tradition of the Russian tsars.

For me, it was particularly exciting to learn how or by what means the giant 1800-tonne granite base of the bronze rider was transported to its current location more than 200 years ago: petersburg.aktuell.ru Petersburg / spz / peter_denkmal_worauf_der_eherne_reiter_galoppiert_33.html

The bronze equestrian statue of Tsar Peter the Great, erected in 1782 on the St. Petersburg Senate Square, is named with the popular name "The Bronze Horseman" (Russian Медный всадник, Medny wsadnik). The equestrian statue is one of the landmarks of Saint Petersburg. Tsar Peter I is depicted “on horseback” on a rearing horse with a snake trampled under its hooves. The scene is supposed to symbolize Peter's victory over the Swedes in the Battle of Poltava.
