The name Opsinnich means that this place is higher than, at least more upstream from, the hamlet of Sinnich. Sinnich is a name with the suffix -ich (from -iacum), which probably already existed in Gallo-Roman times, but the derivation is not certain. It could go back to a form such as Seniacum, but there are also other possibilities. [1]
Opsinnich is the origin of the knight lineages Rhoe van Opsinnich and Van Eynatten van Opsinnich, who inhabited the castle or its predecessor from the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries respectively. The site goes back to a medieval lordship, an allodium (that is, free-for-one's own good), resulting from the fortified house inhabited by a member of the Scavedries family clan, who bore the name (which) Rode of Sinnich.
