Tips

  • The district court is now located in this former castle.
There are also many old buildings around it

  • Before the castle was built, a castle belonging to the East Frisian family of counts and princes, Cirksena, stood on exactly the same spot. From 1565 to 1744 the counts and princes of East Friesland resided here. The castle was demolished in the 19th century by King George V of Hanover and Aurich Castle was built in its place in 1855 in the English Tudor style.
Today the building is used as the administrative headquarters.
