Schloss ob Ellwangen - the former residence of the abbots and prince provosts - was built around 1200 as a monastery castle.
In the 17th century, the castle was rebuilt into a four-wing palace in the Renaissance style and from 1720 - 1727 was given a baroque interior design with the installation of a representative staircase and ceiling paintings by the well-known fresco painter Christoph Thomas Scheffler (1694 - 1756). After the secularization of 1802/03, the residence was, among other things, a temporary apana castle for Napoleon's brother Jerôme, King of Westphalia.
Today the castle is owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg and houses the castle museum, which has existed since 1908, in the stately rooms (2nd floor). The sponsor is the Geschichts- und Altertumsverein Ellwangen e.V., founded in 1904.
