as a tree of liberty to commemorate the liberation of Nieuwpoort on September 6 and 9, 1944 by the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, more specifically the "12th Manitoba Dragoons" with the support of the "Essex Scottish Regiment" and local resistance fighters.
