Founded in Maison des Mariniers, the oldest house in town from the 15th century with French oak ceilings, by a cute American who fell in love with the romantic Canal Boats (and married a Frenchman), this museum tells the amazing story of 200 years of canal boat skippers and their often hard lives on the Rhine-Rhône canal. The Batellerie lifestyle essentially ended in the 1960s when their small boats became uneconomic while the commercial transportation canal barges became too big for the Rhine-Rhône Canal beyond the confluence with the Saône. The museum makes a valuable heroic effort to preserve the oral history of the last canal skippers before they die out. For hours and details see musee-saintjeandelosne.com

The Musée de la Batellerie is set in a 15th-century house with French oak ceilings. This typical setting holds true treasures for boat lovers or for anyone interested in the history of the river: old documents, photographs, models, etchings, antiques, ... In the three rooms of the permanent exhibition, you can follow or rediscover life the skipper in old times.

You could visit bigger or more prestigious museums, but this is something else ... Its simplicity opens doors to dreams amidst objects, etchings and documents that bring two centuries of technical, economic and human history back to life. (Museum)
