The castle was built between 1667 and 1677 in Renaissance style on the walls of a former castle. Later came Baroque parts. From 1874 it was used as a prison. Since 2006 it is privately owned.

A castle in Coswig was first mentioned in 1187 .. The castle was first mentioned in 1342 .. The princes of Anhalt were based in Coswig from 1212. During the conquest by the Spaniards in 1547, the castle was destroyed and rebuilt from 1555 to 1560. The previous castle was used repeatedly as a widow's seat from 1562. The castle was expanded from 1622 to 1623, as well as from 1667 to 1677. In 1866 the castle served as a military hospital and from 1870-71 as a prisoner of war camp. From 1873 to 1957 it was a prison. From 1961 to 1989 it housed the State and State Archives. From 1998 to 2006 it was empty. It has been privately owned by the Italian Dr. Magnolia Albertazzi from Milan.

That was certainly a very nice castle, but it looks as if it is currently in decay.
