The numerous ditches were created from 1718 to 1724 to drain the mottled Havelländische Luch. The Kreuzgraben itself was not created until 1788. The foundation for the mowing of this depression was laid around 1232, when the citizens of the city of Spandau dammed the north Havel Arm to increase the water pressure needed for a mill. When the first lock was built in 1723, this was in addition a stowage in the sink of today's Radeland.
The years of drainage of this area but had an impact on the groundwater level of Berlin. Without further ado, the drainage ditches became irrigation ditches. Through the Kuhlake Havelwasser is pumped into the trenches, which seeps into the groundwater.(Source: stadtentwicklung.berlin.de/forsten/ausflugstipps/de/2005/april.shtml)
