These tables or high benches were formerly used at crossings or before gradients to settle head or back loads to "resting" = to be able to rest.

There are many traditional terms for hearth stone: also Ruhstein, Ruhbank, Grubstock, Gruhe, Gruhbank, Krugstatt or Gruegstatt as well as Raststein. The surviving hearthstones mostly date from the period between the 16th and 19th centuries, when farmers, servants, maids, messengers, peddlers or traders still carried heavy loads with backpacks or on their heads. Rest benches were usually built in places that offered a rest, for example before, during or after an ascent or descent or in shady places in the forest.
