It represents the highest point of the Camino de Santiago Francés, at 1500m above sea level. It consists of a wooden post about five meters high topped by an iron cross. At its base, over the years, a mound of stones brought by pilgrims has formed. A legend tells that when the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela was built, pilgrims were asked to contribute by bringing stone. In any case, the tradition is to throw a stone at the mound, brought from the place of origin of the pilgrim, with his back to the cross to symbolize that the port has been left behind.

La Cruz de Hierro is one of the most important highlights of the entire Camino de Santiago. All the cyclists stop here to leave the stone they have carried all the way up to here and place it on the pile of other stones to set off again lighter, both in the soul, in the heart and in the legs :-) The climb to get there the cross is moderately demanding but the adrenaline always helps.
