The construction was commissioned by the Jewish Meyer-Bendix family in the 19th century. The location right next to the Berkel was well chosen, because water was needed to tan the hides, first when soaking the hides, but then when actually tanning with tree bark. The fact that the Jewish owners ceased operations in the late 1930s was a result of the Nazi tyranny.
