Lake Tovel, Italian Lago di Tovel, is a lake in the Brenta Adamello Natural Park in Italy. Roughly triangular in shape, it is about a kilometer long and about 500 meters wide. This makes it the second largest lake in the “Brenta Dolomites” with a surface area of around 382,450 m². Its maximum depth reaches 38.5 m, the sea level is 1177.2 m s.l.m.
Two tributaries feed the lake: the torrents Rislà and S. Maria Flavona.
The lake became known for the algae blooms that occurred in the warmer summer months until the mid-1960s and gave the lake a dark red color, which is why it was also called the "red lake". This colouration, which is unusual in freshwater lakes, was caused by the mass occurrence of a microalgae from the group of dinoflagellates, the 20 μm large Glenodinium sanguineum. Investigations attribute the occurrence of such a mass increase to the phosphorus content and the light conditions. In 2009 and 2010, this phenomenon also occurred at Seealpsee in Appenzell.
