The Blue Gate or porta arboreti forms the monumental entrance to the castle Ooidonk, a moated castle that originated in the 14th century. It was first the residence of the lords of Nevele. Among them, Ooidonk was involved in numerous social conflicts and the religious wars of the 16th century. The castle was then rebuilt by the Antwerp notable Maarten della Faille, who had the castle furnished according to the taste and spirit of the Renaissance and gave it a residential character.

Since 1864, the castle has been privately owned by the t'Kint de Roodenbeke family, who expanded and renovated the castle without compromising the playful Flemish Renaissance style.
