Until the 19th century, the stream supplied water to supply several hammers, which were bought up prior to the construction of the Herbinghauser Stiekum dam in order to avoid water rights disputes. The valley floor is now almost entirely forested and therefore looks "natural". If you look closely, you can still occasionally see dams from hammer canals and reservoirs. Part of today's valley path is on the narrow-gauge railway line that was built to build the Herbinghauser dam.
