Millions of years ago, the Urdonau sanded the valley in the rocky ground. Into a rock that was a coral reef a few million years ago, in a big sea. When the first humans arrived here 40,000 years ago, the Urdonau had long left the valley, only a narrow stream, the Ach, remained and flowed through the dry, steppe-like landscape. The herds of animals must be pulled along there: musk ox, buffalo, reindeer, wild horses and mammoth herds. Down there, people had to climb to fetch water.

65 million years ago, the Danube dug the valley into the rock. About 40000 years ago, the first modern humans from Africa via Asia entered the region that today is called Germany. They moved the Danube upriver to the Swabian Alb. In the distance was the glacier that covered the Alps far into the foothills. Northern Germany was also in the ice and should be populated only 25 000 years later. In groups of 30 to 40 people, our ancestors reached the slopes and valleys around today's Ulm.
