A stone tower catches the eye in the Boekenberg Park. “That's the Hunter's Tower. It looks like a ruin, but it is not that old at all.” The ruins and the caves with ice cellar were built in the 19th century as a folly - the English word for useless structure - by banker Jan Willem Smets. Smets was the second lord of Boekenberg Castle, which we will encounter further along the walk. He created a 'fairytale park' with a Chinese pagoda, of which now only the ground floor remains.
“Those follicles served to impress his guests. This way he could sail with a boat into the caves, the largest artificial cave massif in Europe.” They now house the Natural History Museum, which is famous abroad. In the summer you can visit the complex on Sundays. In winter the cave is a hibernation place for bats.
