The Leysiel barrage fulfills several functions: The 30 meter wide sluice supports the drainage function of the facilities in Greetsiel and Leybuchtsiel. The 200-hectare reservoir, which is located inside the dyke, serves both to absorb the water flowing through the sewers and as storage space when the inland water is pumped in via pumping stations in the event of storm surges lasting several days.
