In 1980 the US military erected a transmitter on the 593-meter-high Hardberg. It had nothing to do with the HR radio station 130 meters to the north. The complex consisted of an approximately 50 meter high open transmission tower made of steel profiles and a rectangular concrete building at the foot of the tower. The area was secured with a 3 meter high fence with a barbed wire crown. The facility was manned by the US military in three shifts during operation. After German reunification, the transmitter location was abandoned and the equipment was partially expanded by the US Army. A sale of the complex to the community of Wald-Michelbach failed because of the high sales price of 100,000 DM. The area was fallow until around 2008. The upper quarter of the tower was then removed and cell phone antennas were installed. Since the fence erected by the Americans around the facility was damaged in several places by fallen trees, a new fence was erected, which, however, was erected closer to the structures. The remaining area is currently used to park forest machines. The system is no longer manned
