The Ümminger See in Bochum is one of the gems in the area and is suitable for both walks and as an intermediate destination for hikes or excursions with MTB or trekking bike.

At the last stage of the Harpener Bach before it flows into the Langendreerbach, lies the Ümminger See. It is a popular excursion destination and, in the middle of the Ruhr area, the original mining pond offers numerous opportunities for recreation.
Walkers, hikers, cyclists and joggers will find an extensive network of paths around the lake - which is not much larger than the Harpener Teiche, but is perceived more easily from the banks because of its geometry - with numerous seating and various leisure options. A playground, a roller skating rink, a model boat jetty for electric RC boats, a halfpipe, sports equipment and sunbathing areas offer options for different tastes, from sporting activities, family leisure to idle time. Inline skaters do not have ideal conditions here because of the rough but easily accessible paths.

From the Wittener road down and schwupps one is in the recreational area. Currently (May 2017) it is especially nice here, as all sorts of birds can be seen with their chicks.

Here you can enjoy nature, is very busy on weekends.

Beautiful little lake with water birds and opportunities for a rest

The lake is fed by the Harpener Bach, which flows through the lake from north to south and drains it into the Ruhr via the Oelbach. In the Middle Ages, two mill ponds were created as a forerunner of the lake at the mill of the Schulte-Suntum farm. Contamination with mine water began in the 18th century with the construction of the Dorothea Erbstollen of the Vollmond colliery. In order to clarify the mine water, tailings ponds were created. One of these ponds was created southwest of the Schulte-Suntum farm. While the main part of the water flowed directly into the tailings pond, there was a ditch on the eastern side as a bypass, which met the stream again below the pond outlet. With the closure of the Robert Müser colliery in 1968, the tailings pond became superfluous. From the Ümminger See to the Kemnader reservoir it is not too far to walk.Unfortunately, it can still be seen that people with little sense sit on the meadow and feed all kinds of poultry (especially geese).Feeding the birds bread is also dangerous because they lose their fear of people and become lazy and dependent. The animals dare to venture too far out of their protective waters and can become victims of road traffic, dogs or cats. In addition, feeding them bread takes away their actual work, i.e. the search for food. This can lead to extreme boredom in the ducks and be fatal to the females. So it happens that the males try to compulsively mate with the females. The females are repeatedly pushed under water and can even drown.

What ducks and geese actually eatDucks feed mainly on (aquatic) plants, fruits and seeds. Insects, frog spawn, tadpoles, worms and snails are also on their menu.

Feeding ducks and geese according to §55 of the Administrative Offenses Act and punished with a fine of 30 euros. This is not to annoy you. It serves to protect the animals, the cleanliness of bodies of water and bank areas and to avoid rats from leftover food lying around.
