The site of the early medieval fortification "Römerschanze" on the east bank of the Gerdau between Holdenstedt and Veerßen was built for negotiations between Franks and tribes north and south of the Elbe. For this purpose, Charlemagne came to the Bardegau with his entourage to secure his northernmost territory.
