Torri di Fraele and Lago delle Scale from Bormio

    880m

Embark on a challenging touring bicycle ride from Bormio to the historic Torri di Fraele and the serene Lago delle Scale. This difficult route, spanning 17.1 miles (27.4 km) with an elevation gain of 2877 feet (877 metres), takes about 2 hours and 16 minutes to complete. You will climb a paved road featuring 21 to 22 hairpin bends, offering consistent gradients and spectacular panoramic views of the Valdidentro and the Italian Alps. As you ascend, the ancient Torri di Fraele emerge dramatically against the mountain backdrop, leading you to the tranquil turquoise waters of Lago delle Scale.

While the main climb is paved, be aware that sections around Lago delle Scale and the larger Lago di Cancano can be unpaved or consist of compacted gravel, so a mountain bike or e-bike might be more suitable than a road bike if you plan to explore further. The climb to Torri di Fraele averages a 6.9% gradient, making it a smooth but demanding ascent that requires very good fitness. The descent, with its numerous hairpin bends, can be technical, so ride with caution. Traffic is relatively low once you pass a certain point, as it becomes a toll road.

This route is a must-do for cyclists visiting Bormio, often called a "mini Stelvio" due to its distinctive hairpin bends and historical significance. The Torri di Fraele, built in 1391, served as ancient signal towers, marking a border and offering a glimpse into the region's past. The road to Cancano, now fully paved, has even hosted stages of the Giro d'Italia, highlighting its status as an iconic climb. You will experience a unique blend of natural beauty within the Stelvio National Park and impressive historical engineering.
