The key factor in the creation of the museum was the nearby Army Aviation School, today's International Helicopter Training Center, which has been stationed at the Bückeburg Army Airfield since 1960.

The beginnings of the museum go back to 1961. The then sergeant major and helicopter pilot Werner Noltemeyer was commissioned by his commander to set up a small helicopter museum on the barracks grounds of the Army Aviation School at the airfield in Achum, today's Bückeburg Army Airfield. Over the years, the aviation industry has provided visual aids for the small museum. The museum could only be used for official purposes as it was located in the military security area. It was only accessible to soldiers, special guests and registered school classes in the area.

In 1970 the museum moved to the center of Bückeburg, and the city made the Münchhausen-Burgmannshof available for the ever-growing, extensive collection of helicopters. On June 9, 1971, the Helicopter Museum was inaugurated there and thus accessible to the general public. The exhibition area of the museum was expanded in the years 1978 to 1980 by a 2,000 square meter extension.

In June 2011 - just in time for the 40th anniversary of the Helicopter Museum - the extension built in a modern architectural style was opened to the public after the existing exhibition had been thoroughly revised and adapted to modern museum educational requirements.

Worth a visit as the history of the helicopters is well presented.

If you don't know, you might drive past it. A little unassuming from the outside, but great for any aviation fanatic.
