Even as a child and teenager, I often rode my bike here with friends to "play" in the then unprotected dunes.
Although Rüsterbergen was a few kilometers away from us at home, we hadn't minded at that time because we had to cycle for a long time every day anyway. Now I like to stop by here every jubilee year to refresh old memories.

The moving inland dune in the Rüsterbergen nature reserve on the Kiel Canal is one of the region's natural attractions. Old farms dominate the picture on the southern and northern banks of the canal. An always exciting event takes place several times a day at the pilot station in Rüsterbergen. From the bank, "sailors" can watch the change of pilots, who are transferred to the passing ships in small, fast boats in order to guide them safely through the artificial waters created more than a hundred years ago. Hikers and cyclists can accompany the swimming giants for a while on the slab paths on the banks of the canal.
