Saumane-de-Vaucluse is a magnificent perched village with dry stone houses and cobbled streets, overlooked by the castle where the Marquis de Sade spent part of his childhood. Perched on its rocky peak, the castle protected the village attached to its walls. In case of danger, it also served as a refuge for the inhabitants of "Vallis Clausa" or Vallée Close, known as Fontaine-de-Vaucluse today.
