The name is Slavic and means "the hurrying one".
Since the Black Elster still exists, it is called the White Elster to distinguish it.
The 257 km long river takes on the tributaries Göltzsch, Trieb, Weida, Pleiße and about 40 brooks on its way before it ends at Schkopau in the Saale.
