History of the protected areas in the Rhine delta. The Rhine delta is the largest wetland biotope protection area on Lake Constance and stretches from the mouth of the Old Rhine to the mouth of the New Rhine to the Dornbirner Ach in Hard. Around 2000 hectares of shallow water, reed beds, wet meadows and alluvial forests are protected. It is also an important European breeding and resting area for birds. To date, 330 bird species have been observed. A nature reserve has been designated on both the Austrian and Swiss sides, and in Vorarlberg there is also a Natura 2000 area (fauna-flora habitat and bird protection), a Ramsar area.Source: Wikipedia.
