The last active miller, Alfred Dambach, sold his business in 1947 to NOK, which wanted to realize the "Laufen" power plant project. In January 1976 the construction project, in which a lot of money had already been invested, was stopped. Buyers are being sought for the "Barz" property. The previous tenant takes over the farm and the mill building is acquired by the municipality of Zurzach. The mill building, built shortly after 1878, is gradually being renovated by the Zurzach building authority.
Visit the only intact grain mill on the free-flowing Rhine and learn something about its eventful past.
The oldest mention of the Barzmühle dates back to 1452. The owner was the Bishop of Konstanz. In 1665 the mill was transferred to the community of Zurzach as a fief. The former ship mill on the Rhine appears again and again in general historical records. On December 22, 1998, a foundation was founded to save the Barzmühle. This with the great-grandchildren and donors of the former operator Dambach, Frida and Hans Dambach Sel. From 1999 onwards, the mill worked diligently. Craftsmen, professionals, groups of apprentices, interested parties and other companies worked compulsory labor or at cost. A grinding stage was made ready for operation, which can now be used to produce flour. The following can be seen in the mill today:
- An exhibition on agriculture as a basis for the production of grain
- An intact forge supplemented by exhibits from the Höfli District Museum
The mill is now a popular excursion destination for school classes, class reunions or generally for anyone interested in this ancient craft.
Guided tours of the Barzmühle are also offered.
