The hospital was founded in 1253 on the left bank of the Kleine Nete. At an early stage, the hospital acquired the character of a hospital. Today, four impressive historic buildings remain: the gatehouse (from 1677), the chapel (16th century), the old hospital (from 1670) and the hospital shed (17th century). Today the buildings are used as a public social welfare center.

The Herentals guest house, built before 1253, is undoubtedly the oldest in the Kempen. It gradually evolved from a gasthof to a hospital.
There are four buildings whose architecture is of exceptional historical importance. The entrance gate, the atmospheric chapel, the old monastery and the old guest house barn all date from the seventeenth century. The administration of the Herentals OCMW is now housed in the old monastery. The chapel, also under the management of the CPAS, is still regularly used for weddings, baptisms and funeral ceremonies.
