In the years 1878 - 1880 it was built according to a design by the Hanoverian architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase in neo-gothic style. Four predecessor churches had been around 800 AD. their place on the site of today's community center, where their foundations were uncovered during construction of the community building in 1968. It was then regarded as a small church historical sensation, because until then there was no evidence for Christian wooden churches in northern Germany. In the following centuries, the four extensions were made, which can also be archaeologically well documented.

Tostedt was first mentioned in 1105. Jurisdiction has been proven in Tostedt since 1625. Tostedt is still the seat of a district court with overriding jurisdiction over the commercial register for the entire area of the Elbe-Weser triangle. Napoleon is said to have stayed in the old post office on the sand (where the horses of the stagecoaches were changed) in the house of the Huth family.

The first church in Tostedt, one of the oldest wooden churches in northern Germany, was located on the site of today's parish hall from around 800 AD.

Today's Johanneskirche in Tostedt was built between 1878 and 1880 according to a design by the Hanoverian master builder Conrad Wilhelm Hase. It is a five-nave neo-gothic building. The baptismal font made of bell bronze from 1423, the winged altar from 1480 and the Renaissance pulpit from 1608 were adopted from their predecessors. The organ by Philipp Furtwängler and the altar by Theodor Maßler date from the year the church was built.
