There is a happy place in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park that is heaven for Bay Area inline and roller skaters who like to boogie to the funky beat on wheels. Golden Gate Park has a rich history of skating that dates back to the late 1800’s. Way back then, the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department established a roller rink in the park and offered skate rentals. goldengatepark.com/6th-avenue-skate-park.html . After skating had spread throughout the park it was banned for a while, until the location at 6th Avenue and Kennedy Drive was officially dedicated and recognized as the home for outdoor roller skating in San Francisco since the roller disco days of 1979 when it was common to see 15,000 to 20,000 people flocking to the park to skate on car-free Sundays. The closed roads become a safe recreational paradise for runners, walkers, skaters, cyclists and others who were looking to escape the pressures of the fast paced city lifestyle and enjoy themselves in a lush, green, sylvan park environment.
Skatin' Place is free and available for skating every day. Busy every Sunday from noon to 5PM. Skaters gather here on Wednesdays from about 3PM to 5PM and on Saturdays from 1PM to 5PM. cora.org/skatinplace.htm
