The former fortified town, surrounded by greenery, an agricultural market between French Flanders and Artois, stands out for the high towers of the belfry and the collegiate church. The city was very prosperous under Spanish rule in the 16th and 17th centuries. There are still beautiful old facades to be seen in this peaceful town.

The Bailiff's House (French: bailliage) is a civil building in the town of Aire-sur-la-Lys, part of the Pas-de-Calais department, located on the corner of the Grand'Place, the Rue d'Arras and the Rue du Bourg. The building was already in use in 1600 as accommodation for the city militia. The architect, Pierre Framery, was inspired by the Old Town Hall of Amsterdam, built in Renaissance style. In the 17th and 18th centuries, justice was also administered here several times by the bailiff, hence the name of the building. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the building also served as a temporary town hall and police station. In 1970 the Office de Tourisme was housed here. Temporary exhibitions are held in the Great Hall. The building was classified as a historic monument as early as 1886.
