The shoemaker's cross commemorates the escalating conflict that spread across Europe after the seizure of power in 1933. The border ridge between Austria and Germany was anything but a safe place in these times of political tension. Today, a cross commemorates this chapter. Surrounded by low-growing mountain pines, the view extends far from up here – to Reit im Winkl, to the Chiemsee lake, and to the Steinplatte.

To start you have to go to the Blindau hikers' car park, Fulhornweg. From there a dial-a-bus runs every hour. But be careful: the last bus down is at 4:30 p.m. A descent from the Hindenburg Hütte on foot is NOT advisable. (4 km super steep downhill, approx. 2h walk)
There is NO other way to get to the Hindenburg Hut. No passage for private and no parking above.
