The natural source provides ferric water, which does not particularly pamper the taste buds, but otherwise is extremely healthy and valuable. The fountain is accessible to everyone and free to use!

The Schmechten “Mead Fountain”Schmechten has long been known for its healing and mineral springs. Particularly worthy of mention are the carbon dioxide springs, which lie 2000 m to 3000 m deep and are of volcanic origin. Chronicles report five such springs, the most famous of which is the Mead Fountain. The reputation of the delicious taste of its water and its healing properties is said to have reached as far as Spain 1000 years ago.This fountain was first mentioned in documents in 973. The Arab Ibrahim Tartuschi is said to have passed through Schmechten and described this “honey spring”: “The water tastes like honey at first, but it has a gall aftertaste from the trees around it.”The Schmechten mead fountain experienced its heyday under Prince-Bishop Ferdinand von Fürstenberg (1661-1683), who drank the water every day when he was in Dringenberg.......more see link belowstolen from:
