The Aachener Landgraben is the name of the fortification along the nearly 70 km long border of the former Aachen empire. Individual sections can be documented already for the 14th and 15th centuries, but only at the beginning of the 17th century, the construction of the Landwehr was completed and on April 11, 1611 by Albrecht VII of Habsburg, the reigning ruler of the Spanish Netherlands in Brussels, Contractually legitimized with the Schöffen and the city council in Aachen.
