Książ Castle

An audio-guided tour of this impressive castle takes about an hour and a half and is highly recommended. It is often called the most beautiful castle in Lower Silesia.

Książ Castle, or Zamek Książ in Polish, is the largest castle in Silesia and today the third largest in all of Poland. Its history dates back to the 13th century. It has been repeatedly rebuilt and expanded, but only reached its present (giant) size at the beginning of the 20th century. After the owners' insolvency, it became German state property in the 1930s and was rebuilt after 1940. Several theories surround the purpose of the renovation, including the construction of a network of large-diameter underground tunnels. These theories range from a repository of art treasures to a modern weapons factory to a Nazi headquarters in Silesia.
