Atlantic Wall - Widerstandsnest 37 Asnelles
This German WN 37 bunker is located on the boulevard of Asnelles.
This casemate had an 88mm gun, which was aimed at the beach for frontal defense.
This coastal blockhouse, typical of those along the coast, inflicted heavy losses on the Allies and slowed their progress. However, the gun was silenced around noon by a direct hit from a self-propelled gun of the 147th Royal Artillery Field Regiment (Essex Yeomanry).
The bunker belonged to a fortified ensemble called WiderstandNest 37 or WN37 (Defensive Position 37), which also included a minefield and the buildings of a sanatorium.
The sanatorium was an institution intended for the isolation of patients thought to have primary infectious tuberculosis. Between 1928 and 1938, almost 2,000 children were admitted.
The Germans requisitioned it in 1940 and it became an important element in their defense system. On June 6, 1944, it was occupied by ambush snipers and captured by the Allies around 4 p.m.
