Flames have been burning from the rocks for centuries. The flames are created by combustion of gases that escape from small openings. Really impressive!

A beautiful, well-developed hiking trail with large steps leads to the lower flames of the Chimera. It is here a gas mixture with about 11 percent methane content, which emerges from small openings in metamorphic rock that has been burning for millennia. Two thousand years ago athletes from Olympus lit their torches here and carried the fire down to the valley and opened the first Olympic Games in Anatolia.

A much narrower and even steeper trail leads up to the upper flames of Chimera, which are smaller and less spectacular. But it is less crowded up there and you have a great view.

The trail is part of the Lycian Way, so to do this part you have to pay 7TL for visiting this once holy place.
