In the historic center of Rheinberg, a mighty complex of buildings stands out. It is the headquarters of the well-known herb bitter company Underberg, which has meanwhile largely relocated production to Berlin. In the prestigious Underberg villa today is u.a. housed the company archive.
After the company founder Hubert Underberg had acquired some buildings at Rheinstraße, Holzmarkt and Marktstraße, he had his residential and commercial building built in their place in the middle of the 19th century. The design in the style of an Italian-French influenced late Renaissance was provided by the Düsseldorf Academy Professor Ernst Giese. Of the interiors, the vestibule with a staircase equipped with classical stucco work and the hall with rococo stucco on the first floor are to be mentioned. The construction still serves as a business representation for the family business Underberg.
